Walmart eked out the top spot as the most popular grocery store in the Philly metro.

Why it matters: The area's 10 leading grocery chains are vying for loyal shoppers while those customers are spending more money at restaurants.

By the numbers: Walmart and its supercenters took 16.6% of the market share last year, barely overcoming Acme at 15.7%, according to new data from Chain Store Guide.

  • Giant and Martin's stores came in third (13.2%), followed by Costco (6%) and Wegmans (5.3%).

Flashback: Walmart maintained the crown of top supermarket for a second straight year.

Zoom in: Acme stores are the most ubiquitous in the region with 81, followed by Giant and Martin's (64 combined), and Walmart and Target (44 each).

What to watch: Walmart is remodeling its stores in 2024 while seeking to open more than 150 stores in the U.S. over the next five years, Axios' Rebecca Falconer reports.
