Walgreens will start selling abortion pills this month in a handful of states, including Pennsylvania.

Why it matters: The move will increase the availability of mifepristone just as the U.S. Supreme Court hears oral arguments over access to the drug.

State of play: Walgreens will begin dispensing mifepristone in a phased rollout within a week in select locations in Pennsylvania, New York, Massachusetts, California and Illinois.

  • Walgreens spokesperson Fraser Engerman declined to say what locations in the Keystone State will sell the drug.

Meanwhile, CVS plans to fill prescriptions for the medication in the weeks ahead in Massachusetts and Rhode Island. The chain expects to expand access to the drug in other states where it's legal on a rolling basis.

Flashback: Both chains received the required certification to dispense mifepristone under last year's Food and Drug Administration regulatory change.
