The best hamburger I've ever eaten was from a roadside stand in Southwest Oklahoma that operated for 90-ish years. Sadly, fire closed its doors.
- I'm pretty sure the cook would've sneered at the hype the "Oklahoma Smash Burger" received in recent years.
- I snicker myself when I sit down in an East Coast eatery and an "Okie Burger" gets top billing on the menu.
The setup: Big Daddy's Burgers in Fayetteville doesn't claim the moniker or lineage, but it's clear its inspiration comes from the smash genre.
- The place is even in an old gas station with the former double-bay garage serving as the dining room.
Big Daddy's is a concept from Todd and Nickki Golden, who operate Isabella's, Mermaids and TJ's Sandwich Shop.
Dig in: Two flat patties are standard. I tried the basic with cheese, lettuce, pickles and onion, and the house red pepper mayo, minus tomato. The combo ($16) comes with fries and a canned drink.
- My date opted for the mushroom-Swiss version, which was $2 more.
The verdict: "It was good as long as you don't expect anything other than what it is," my date said.
- She also said it was probably one of the better burgers she's had in the area.
I agree. The burger was big, sloppy and salty. Packed with flavor. Plenty of food for dinner and way too much for lunch.
- The disappointment came with a little too much pink meat on one end.
- The fries were fine, but were no big deal.
Check it out: Monday-Wednesday 11am-9pm, Thursday-Saturday 11am-10pm, closed on Sunday, at 388 Nelson Hackett Blvd., Fayetteville.
