Happy belated National Dog Day (it was Tuesday) to the good boys and girls out there — including the many mutts who need adopting from local shelters.
The big picture: The chihuahua is the top dog breed in the Arkansas, according to a new U.S. News & World Report analysis.
The fine print: The annual report relies on pet insurance data, so it doesn't account for all dogs in the country.
- Last year, the Chihuahua was No. 1 nationwide, but analysts had separated "Labs" (then No. 2) and "black Labs" (then No. 10) into separate categories.
- This year, the Labrador category includes labs of all colors and they took the top spot.
The top dogs in Arkansas are:
- Chihuahua
- American pit bull terrier
- Labrador retriever
Yes, but: The American Kennel Club came up with a slightly different top 5 national list: French bulldog, Labrador retriever, Golden retriever, German shephard and Poodle.
Zoom out: Arkansas isn't alone — it joins 12 other states making the chihuahua a fave, including Texas, Oklahoma, Mississippi and Alabama. That is, according to U.S. News & World Report.
💠Worth's thought bubble: Yeah, no. I think we all know the Chihuahua isn't really No.1 in Arkansas.
- I could see Labrador retrievers, given the popularity of duck hunting and the value built in their training, but I've known only one person who's owned a Chihuahua, and they took it to Texas.
