Mayor LaToya Cantrell faces federal civil rights lawsuit

The other side: "The City of New Orleans will withhold any comment at this time due to the ongoing nature of this litigation," Cantrell's spokesperson said in a statement provided in response to a request for comment on the lawsuit. "Our position will be communicated in our answer to the petition."

Catch up quick: Earlier this year, French Quarter resident Anne Breaud submitted photos to the watchdog organization Metropolitan Crime Commission. The photos (one of which is above) appear to show Cantrell eating a meal with her then-bodyguard Jeffrey Vappie, whom the FBI has accused of being in a romantic relationship with Cantrell.

• The photos sparked an NOPD investigation, but Cantrell hit back by accusing Breaud of stalking her. The mayor claimed in a civil lawsuit that Breaud had "aggressively" taken photos and hundreds of hours of video of her.
• A judge threw out Cantrell's lawsuit and ordered her to pay Breaud's legal fees instead.

The latest: In a new federal civil rights lawsuit filed against Cantrell, her chief of staff and the NOPD officers who took Cantrell's police report, Breaud says she was defamed and faced "intentional infliction of emotional distress," according to a copy of the document shared by WWL.

• The lawsuit says Cantrell "illegally obtained" private details about Breaud, including her Social Security number.
• It also states that the police report included "defamatory" details about a since-expunged arrest for a 2016 incident in which Breaud was later determined to be the victim.
