Nashville downtown library sets reopening date

Flashback: A fire inside the attached parking garage on June 10 forced its closure.

Zoom in: A team of restoration experts, environmentalist professionals and industrial hygienists undertook the work of getting the library in shape to reopen.

• The reopening is pending a final inspection by the fire marshal and Metro Codes.

By the numbers: According to an assessment last year, 90% of the library sustained "very light soot and smoke" damage.

• Less than 10% of the building, mainly the conference center on the first floor, suffered moderate or heavy damage.

State of play: Library visitors will be able to browse the collection, check out books, sign up for library cards and use the public Wi-Fi, according to a press release.

• Customers will also be able to access all of the public areas of the library except for the conference area, where long-term restoration work will continue.

Caveat: The parking garage, which is owned by the Nashville Department of Transportation, will remain closed for now.
