The Olympics are coming to Nashville in 2028.
- Geodis Park was one of six stadiums announced on Tuesday to host soccer matches for the 2028 Olympics.
Why it matters: Hosting the Olympics is another gold medal for Nashville's status as a soccer city.
- Since Geodis opened in 2022, the fairgrounds stadium has hosted MLS playoff games, the FIFA World Club Cup and the Leagues Cup Final.
What she's saying: "The decision by LA28 to select Nashville SC's stadium to host Olympic soccer matches further solidifies our city and venue's place as a global destination for sports and culture," Nashville SC chief business officer Lindsey Paola tells Axios Nashville.
- "We could not be more excited to play a role in celebrating the world's game when the Summer Olympics return to U.S. soil for the first time in over 30 years."
Zoom in: It's too soon to know which teams or how many matches will come to Nashville.
- The schedule, including the dates and number of games at Geodis, will be announced in April.
- Registration for the ticket draw is open on the LA28 ticketing website through March 18.
By the numbers: The 2028 Olympics will feature more women's soccer teams than men's teams. There will be 16 women's teams that qualify for the tournament compared to 12 men's teams.
- The U.S. women's team has won five gold medals, including at the most recent Summer Olympics in Paris in 2024.
- The men's team has never earned a medal.
Fun fact: On the Olympic stage, Geodis Park will be known as "Nashville Stadium," with similar naming conventions at other arenas.
- On the international stage, stadiums are often required to forego sponsor names and signs to avoid conflicting with branding deals.
