The Tennessee Titans are days away from testing their roster during pivotal training camp sessions.
Why it matters: Training camp, which starts July 22, is where the Titans' hopes for a comeback season will meet reality. The stakes are high.
Catch up quick: The 2024 season wasn't just a dud. It was an all-time low for the franchise. The most enduring images of the 3-14 season may be the (many) memes mocking quarterback Will Levis' repeated flubs.
- When coach Brian Callahan screamed "What the f--- are you doing?!" from the sidelines of a game in September, he was essentially speaking for the city as a whole.
Yes, but: Hope springs eternal in Music City.
State of play: The Titans are heading into the season with new general manager Mike Borgonzi, who has reshuffled the front office.
- The team is looking to rebuild its tattered lineup with an influx of promising rookies led by quarterback Cam Ward, who the team snagged with the No. 1 pick in the draft.
- The Titans left the draft with nine new players.
The intrigue: Fans see Ward as the potential star that has eluded the franchise for years. Teammates are already praising him as a leader, and his work ethic is earning high marks from onlookers.
- Ward shared a 20-minute video last week showing him practicing with some of his new teammates at his old stomping grounds at the University of Miami.
- During the video, Ward says he started the training day at 4:18am.
Between the lines: Training camp is the first time to see Ward and the rest of the newbies in pads. Their performances will guide officials as they trim the roster to 53.
What we're watching: Callahan hasn't committed to a starting quarterback yet. Levis is still in the mix and has been making some improvements during the offseason. But the job is essentially Ward's to lose.
- That would leave Levis fighting to be the team's backup. One possibility team writer Jim Wyatt floated is that Levis could be an attractive trade for other teams if he performs well in camp.
If you go: The Titans will host an open practice session at Nissan Stadium on July 26. Free tickets are still available.
