A surge of Tennessee law enforcement agencies have inked new deals to collaborate with ICE on federal immigration duties.
By the numbers: 21 Tennessee agencies had active or pending agreements with ICE as of this week.
A month ago, only 12 in-state agencies were working with ICE.
Between the lines: Tennessee Republicans advanced legislation this year that created grants to encourage local agencies to work with immigration officials.
The big picture: Statewide agencies including the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security already have high-profile ties to immigration enforcement.
State troopers worked with federal agents in May to conduct about 200 arrests in the Nashville area.
Zoom in: The Sumner and Robertson county sheriff's offices are among the Middle Tennessee agencies working with ICE.
Of note: No local Nashville agencies have agreed to collaborate.
