U.S. Rep. Andy Ogleswas the subject of an FBI search following his closely contested Republican primary victory last week, he confirmed on social media.
The search was first reported by NewsChannel 5.
Why it matters: The FBI's execution of a search warrant ratchets up scrutiny on Ogles' murky campaign finance reports.
State of play: Oglesamended a series of campaign finance disclosures earlier this year, notably removing a $300,000 loan that appeared on multiple reports.
Department of Justice guidelines prohibit law enforcement from taking overt action in investigations of a political candidate in the run-up to an election, according to the NewsChannel 5 report.
The latest: In a social media post Tuesday afternoon,Ogles said the FBI took his cell phone the day after the primary. He said it was his understanding the search was related to his filings.
"It has been widely reported for months that my campaign made mistakes in our initial financial filings. We have worked diligently with attorneys and reporting experts to correct the errors and ensure compliance going forward."
"I am confident all involved will conclude that the reporting discrepancies were based on honest mistakes, and nothing more."
Spokespeople for the U.S. Attorney's Office and the FBI all declined to comment, according to the NewsChannel 5 story.
