This downtown record store was a smash hit all summer, giving World Cup visitors unconventional souvenirs to take back to their home countries.
Vibe check: A small sign outside the Joule Hotel's Taschen Library indicates that the bookshop also sells records under the business name Record Dogo.
- The collection takes up just one wall, for now. A listening station off to the side lets buyers sample the records before buying them.
State of play: Longtime collectors Dylan McGraw and Connor Fields launched Record Dogo earlier this year, curating nearly 1,000 records ranging in price from around $6 to $300.
- The records are sourced from South America, Nigeria, Japan and Europe — because the intent is to offer buyers a "curated niche of rarity," McGraw tells Axios.
- "We write personalized descriptions on every single record. Nothing's AI. We write it all ourselves," he says.
The intrigue: Wegs Wegerbauer, who oversees Taschen Library, says many World Cup travelers were impressed to find records they've wanted for a while.
- "I can't tell you how many foreigners we had come in and buy French, English, Scottish, everything. These guys collect, and even though they had to bring the records home with them, they found things here," Wegerbauer says.
- One visitor was pleasantly surprised to see Nigerian pop on the shelves.
The bottom line: "There's an intentionality you can't escape when you're putting a record on at home," McGraw says.
- "There's a focus, there's a clarity, there's an engagement, there's a buy-in, and that changes your relationship to the art."
