North Texas' diverse population means more grocery shopping options

Foreign World Cup visitors in North Texas have reminded us of the many international flavors available year-round right here in Dallas-Fort Worth.

Why it matters: Grocery shopping is often cheaper and more exciting when you skip the international aisle of an American grocery store and venture elsewhere.

The intrigue: The Wooden Spoon in Plano has been around for over 30 years, selling groceries, gifts and clothing representing Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Finland and Denmark.

"Through hard work, with family, friends and customers, we have built a Nordic Cultural Center where everyone is welcome," owner Gwen Workman, who died last year, said on the store's website.

Zoom in: Mitsuwa's only Texas location is in Plano, featuring Japanese groceries, toy vending machines and a food hall.

Illinois-based Patel Brothers has several locations in North Texas, catering to the region's large South Asian population. Competitor India Bazaar opened in Plano in 2004 before expanding across Texas.
Sara's Market, in Richardson, opened as a pita bakery in 1998 and now includes a butcher shop with Mediterranean groceries.
