Elon Musk wants to build a mile-long tunnel in southern Dallas through his startup, Boring Company.
Driving the news: This week, the company announced Dallas, New Orleans and Baltimore as the winners of its Tunnel Vision Challenge, which received 487 submissions for tunnels that could solve real-world problems.
Yes, but: The company still needs to decide if the project is feasible.
Next steps include meetings with regulators and community leaders and examining the subsurface to see if the tunnel can be built.
The intrigue: University Hills spans 270 acres and will have around 580 single-family homes and 1,500 apartments, built in phases.
The development will also have a town center and over 50 acres of green spaces.
Construction of the homes is expected to start early next year, per a news release from the city of Dallas.
Reality check: Despite pitching tunnel projects to multiple cities, the Boring Company had only dug about eight miles in Las Vegas as of last summer, per Bloomberg.
