Dallas is taking applications for the next poet laureate and youth poet laureate.
Why it matters: The honor recognizes local writers and gives them a platform to encourage creative writing and literacy in the community.
Flashback: The city's first poet laureate, Joaquín Zihuatanejo, was named in April 2022.
The current poet laureate, Mag Gabbart, will serve through March.
State of play: The poet laureate serves a two-year term, during which they pen works to read at community events and schools. The laureate also hosts literary workshops and produces two annual reports.
The youth laureate serves for a year and receives a $1,000 scholarship.
How it works: The next poet laureate will serve from April to March 2028 and receive a $20,000 honorarium over the two years.
Deep Vellum publishes the poet's works at the end of the term.
What's next: Poet laureate applications are due Dec. 15. Youth poet laureate applications are due Dec. 31.
