A Mark Rothko painting owned by Fort Worth billionaire Sid Bass sold at auction in New York last night for $37.8 million.
Why it matters: It's among several post-war pieces collected by Sid and Anne Bass being auctioned off this week.
Auction house Christie's New York says the Basses compiled one of the most significant American collections of the 20th century.
What they're saying: "From the masterpieces that hung on the walls to each flower in the garden, the Bass House was the culmination of years of thought, consideration, and planning," the auction house writes.
What's next: Andy Warhol's "Ballet Slippers," goes to auction Thursday.
The Basses acquired the piece directly from Warhol, per Christie's New York.
