Around 22% of Texans identify as Catholic, per data from Pew Research Center.
The big picture: Pew surveyed 35,000 Americans in all 50 states in 2007, 2014 and 2023-24 about their religious affiliations, beliefs and practices.
- An estimated 62% of Americans identify as Christian, the survey found.
Zoom in: 60% of adults in the Dallas-Fort Worth metro identify as Christian. 14% identify as Catholic.
- The region has dozens of Catholic churches.
What they're saying: The Catholic Diocese of Dallas held a Mass yesterday in downtown Dallas in honor of Pope Francis. Near the front sat a photo of the pope releasing a dove and smiling.
- "I find it amazing that on Easter Sunday, our Holy Father was in St. Peter's Square in the Vatican, with the faithful. … In his ill health, he saw the need to be with the flock," Bishop Edward J. Burns said during the Mass.
