Two throwback photos of Dallas-Fort Worth

The Dallas skyline didn't become iconic until Reunion Tower was finished in the late 1970s.

The intrigue: If it weren't for the Old Red courthouse, we might not have even recognized the photo above while scrolling through archives.

• Fort Worth, meanwhile, is still fairly recognizable in 1974 because of the convention center, lovingly dubbed the "flying saucer."

Flashback: Fort Worth has grown the most since the 1970s, when about 385,000 people lived in the city.

• The Dallas population was much bigger with about 844,000 residents.
