EF-1 tornado confirmed in Irving

• The tornado brought peak winds of 110 mph.

The big picture: More than 300,000 customers were without power at 6am after rainstorms bringing wind gusts passed through Dallas-Fort Worth.

• Winds up to 60 mph continued throughout the day, slowing power restoration. Over 100,000 customers remained powerless by midafternoon, per Oncor.

Stunning stat: DFW Airport recorded 74 mph winds Tuesday morning, the strength of a Category 1 hurricane, per the NWS Fort Worth office.

• An unofficial weather service site in Little Elm reported 83 mph winds.

State of play: Crashes were reported across the region. Dallas Fire-Rescue responded to more than 50 traffic accidents early Tuesday, many related to the weather.

• More than 600 flights were delayed at DFW Airport and 451 were canceled by 4pm, according to FlightAware. At Dallas Love Field, 63 flights were canceled.

Zoom in: Oncor employees were spread across the region Tuesday assessing the damage and making repairs.

• The utility shared photos of downed power lines and destroyed roofs.

Threat level: The NWS warned parts of Collin, Denton and Tarrant counties and the western reaches of North Texas of an increased risk of wildfires because of high winds.

• The areas, particularly west of Interstate 35, are abnormally dry.

The intrigue: The strong winds brought in dust from West Texas, creating hazy skies.

What's next: The winds Wednesday are forecast to be calmer, but the weather service says they may still reach 25 mph.
