Dallas-raised Annie Clark of St. Vincent recently released the Spanish version of her seventh album, giving new meaning and tone to many of the songs.
Why it matters: St. Vincent challenged herself to translate her album "All Born Screaming" to show her gratitude for her Spanish-speaking fans in Latin America.
- The result is an album that is even richer than the original English version.
Driving the news: "Todos Nacen Gritando" was released mid-November, about six months after the album's English version debuted.
Zoom in: Clark attended Lake Highlands High School and took Spanish before graduating. She says she is at an eighth-grade level and two of her sisters are fluent.
- Fun fact: One of her sisters co-owns the beloved Resident Taqueria in Lake Highlands.
Context: Clark worked with her friend, filmmaker Alan Del Rio Ortiz, to translate her album, per Rolling Stone.
- Ortiz helped Clark use colloquial Spanish, so some of the songs use slang most commonly used in Mexico.
The intrigue: The album is truly a translation. Clark had to challenge herself to find the best Spanish phrasing that would fit with the music and beat of the original.
- "Reckless" became "Salvaje," which means wild or savage.
- "Big Time Nothing" became "El Mero Cero," or "boss zero" — a play on "el mero mero," which means big boss.
What she's saying: Clark told Vogue she loves playing in Latin America and Spain, where most of the fans are loudly belting her English lyrics in what is likely their second or third language.
- "It was a beautiful exercise and an attempt to offer a little thanks to Spanish-language fans who have met me in my native tongue for seven records," she told NME.
What's next: St. Vincent will perform several nights with Olivia Rodrigo for Rodrigo's "Guts" tour in April in Mexico.
- St. Vincent returns to her hometown April 6 for a show at The Factory.
