Texas is home to nearly 1.4 million veterans, more than 323,000 of whom live in Dallas-Fort Worth, per Census Bureau figures.
Why it matters: Veterans Day is Monday. The national holiday was first celebrated on Nov. 11, 1919, to commemorate the first anniversary of the end of World War I.
- The day recognizes all military veterans.
Zoom in: Veterans make up more than 5% of the Dallas-Fort Worth population. Many have served since 9/11, as seen in the chart above.
- Nearly a third of North Texas veterans live in Tarrant County. Fort Worth is home to the Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base.
The intrigue: A larger share of nonveterans (40.1%) have a bachelor's degree or higher than veterans (37.8%), per Census Bureau figures.
- But, a smaller share of veterans (2.8%) are experiencing unemployment than nonveterans (3.9%).
- And D-FW veterans (6.9%) are less likely to live below the poverty line when compared to nonveterans in the region (9.4%).
What's next: There are several Veterans Day events Monday.
- The Tarrant County Veterans Day Parade starts at 11am at Fort Worth Panther Island Pavilion.
- The Greater Dallas Veterans Day Parade starts at 11am at Fair Park.
