How North Texans can prepare for flu season

State of play: Flu activity typically peaks between December and February. In Texas, the peak can continue into May.

• The risks are higher for children and adults with pre-existing medical conditions.

How it works: Albertsons, CVS, Tom Thumb and Kroger are among the local pharmacies offering free flu vaccines for most insurance plans, per the Fort Worth Report. Some also offer in-store coupons for getting a vaccine through them.

• Uninsured individuals can get a free flu vaccine at select Walgreens locations.

Plus: You can get the latest COVID shot while you're there.

What to do: If you get the flu, Mayo Clinic recommends drinking extra liquids, resting and staying home until the fever is gone. Taking antiviral medication as soon as symptoms begin can also help.
