One of the worst terminals at DFW Airport is finally getting an upgrade.
Why it matters: Updates to Terminal C are part of the airport's $9 billion capital improvement plan, which includes the construction of a sixth terminal.
The big picture: DFW is one of the busiest airports in the world. Over 80 million passengers traveled through it last year.
- The airport's capital improvement plan has over 180 projects, including a plant that will supply renewable energy for the airport, the new Terminal F and an east-west road to State Highway 360.
- The airport says the plan is its biggest capital investment since it opened in 1974.
State of play: Getting assigned to Terminal C feels like punishment. The food options, lighting and bathrooms are all bad — a stark contrast to the modern and airy Terminal D, which features an Eatzi's Market and one of the country's three Capital One lounges.
What they're doing: The airport plans to remove Terminal C's view-blocking columns, add four new gates, replace the concourse, install glass windows and raise the roof. There will also be new shops and restaurants, a lounge space and improved bathrooms.
- The south garage, adjacent to Terminal C, will be demolished and rebuilt with more parking spaces and better technology.
- Terminal A will also get five new gates, new restaurant and retail options, improved bathrooms and more seating.
The intrigue: The project is expected to cost around $3 billion, and Fort Worth-based American Airlines is helping to foot the bill.
Yes, but: Improving the terminals will take time, because they will still be in use. The work on Terminal C will happen in phases and is scheduled to be completed in 2030.
What's next: The south garage closed to new cars over the weekend to prepare for demolition. Drivers have 30 days to remove any cars still parked there.
- The north and central garages are still open.
