Grammy-winning rapper Common surprised children with the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Dallas on Friday as part of an event to boost internet access for at-risk youth.
Why it matters: Students increasingly need internet access for homework and other tasks, but many families can't afford it.
Zoom in: At Friday's event, families learned about Project 10Million, a T-Mobile program that provides free internet access to eligible students from low-income households.
"Every child deserves equal access to reliable internet connectivity because so much learning and homework is happening online," Common said in a statement.
The intrigue: The rapper spent an hour with the children, taking photos with them and telling them to work hard in school and dream big.
And, when the kids chanted "Rap, rap, rap," he performed a spontaneous freestyle rap for them before heading to his concert in Dallas.
What they're saying: "It's such a big experience to meet celebrities like Common and then think, 'Wow, I met him'," 16-year-old Isaac Edwards said after the event.
