The strange, brilliant Atlanta of "Atlanta" turns 10

• Even when the storylines of Earn, Paper Boi, Darius and Van went overseas to Amsterdam, or their characters weren't featured in an episode at all, the show felt like I was watching the city where I lived.
• That is, a diverse and complex city at the heart of a fast-changing suburban area where we experience a glitch in the Matrix at least once a day.

Zoom out: The show debuted Sept. 6, 2016, as metro Atlanta found new footing after the Great Recession, and used the city's legends and landmarks to explore race, culture, capitalism and more.

• But it spoke to more than a moment in time and remains a work of art.

The show, which at the time had one of TV's only all-Black writing rooms, won Peabody Awards, Emmys, Golden Globes and other honors.

Worthy of your time: The great Gavin Godfrey at the AJC's UATL recently rewatched the series and ran down its most memorable moments, from Teddy Perkins to getting trapped in the Atlantic Station parking deck. I'm planning to do the same.

Kristal's thought bubble: The season three premiere, "Three Slaps," stands out for me because it clearly evokes Lake Lanier, the racial violence that led to Black people being expelled from Forsyth County and the folklore linking that history to the lake's deaths.

• Journalist Jewel Wicker, who wrote a brilliant breakdown of the episode and the lore surrounding the lake, said the episode "is a reminder of how the show expertly uses folklore to provide social commentary on metro Atlanta, and the rest of the country."
