Podcast revisits Forsyth County's expulsion of Black residents in 1912

• That history was not well known until 1987, when civil rights activists held a march in Cumming, the county seat, and were met by white residents waving Confederate battle flags and chanting racial slurs.
• Ku Klux Klan members held a rally on the courthouse steps in response.
• After the march, Oprah Winfrey visited the county to document what happened for her daytime talk show.

Driving the news: The first two episodes of "1912: The Forsyth County Expulsion and Its Aftermath" premiere on Tuesday.

• A live recording of the final episode is scheduled for Monday at the Atlanta History Center. The event will also feature a discussion with descendants of families who were driven out of Forsyth County.
• An accompanying exhibit will also be on display at the history center, which also has an extensive digital library on the subject.

The intrigue: The podcast also dives into the impacts those events had on descendants, and seeks to "correct the historical record and confront widely held myths about Forsyth County and the 'haunted' Lake Lanier," WABE said in a press release.

Flashback: About 1,100 Black residents who lived in Forsyth County were terrorized and eventually driven out after a white woman named Mae Crow was found severely beaten in a wooded area in September 1912.

• Crow, 18, who was also raped, died weeks later from her injuries.

• Three Black men and boys were arrested: 24-year-old Rob Edwards, 18-year-old Oscar Daniel and 16-year-old Ernest Knox.
• A mob of white residents took Edwards from his jail cell and lynched him in downtown Cumming, according to the Atlanta History Center.
• Daniel and Knox were convicted by an all-white jury and hanged as a crowd of 5,000 people looked on, Atlanta journalist Jewel Wicker reported.

The big picture: Today, about 70% of Forsyth County residents are white. About one-third of the population is nonwhite, but the Black population is around 5%, according to U.S. Census Bureau population estimates.
