We tried Waffle House's new tacos in metro Atlanta

Waffle House, the Norcross-based culinary and cultural icon, is getting into the tacos game — for a limited time.
Why it matters: The Waffle House empire stretches across more than 2,000 locations in 25 states, and the menu and stores are familiar territory.
- But they occasionally become proving grounds for new menu items. And a new fighter has entered the arena.
Driving the news: This past week, I ventured to the Chamblee Dunwoody location to visit one of the roughly 45 metro locations testing out the product.
Zoom in: The concept is essentially Waffle House favorites transferred to a tortilla: chicken melt, patty melt, cheesesteak melt and several egg-and-breakfast-meat combinations.
- I opted for two chicken tacos diced and peppered (with tomatoes and jalapeños) alongside straight-up hash browns in the ring.
Verdict: If you like a Waffle House sandwich and you like tacos (and can part with the toast), I think you'll enjoy Waffle House tacos.
- The secret is in the large flour tortilla that's oiled and grilled to just the right level of golden, so you get a slight crunch.
Zoom out: Mr. Mitchell was my cook and accepted my order with gusto.
- Nymare, a master at why-not-try upselling (and I mean that in the most complimentary way), was my server and said demand has been strong.
Like everything at Waffle House, the tacos are available 24 hours a day — maybe even during a hurricane.
- You get two with each order. Mine cost a little over $7.
The bottom line: It's unclear how long the tacos will stick around, so sample them while you can.
