Georgia Tech turns dorms into World Cup stays

Driving the news: With students out for summer, Tech is turning the North Avenue Apartments complex into hotel rooms for people "attending, volunteering, or working with soccer-related activities in Atlanta this summer."

Zoom in: For $237 a night per person, you get a no-frills private room in the four- to six-bedroom apartments (hope you like strangers). Guests will share a living room and kitchen and one bathroom per two bedrooms.

• The cost includes linens and breakfast and access to a fitness center.

Context: The complex overlooks the Downtown Connector and is a short walk from Centennial Olympic Park, where the Fan Festoval will be.

Fun fact: The apartments were built in the mid-1990s as part of another pivotal moment in Atlanta history: the 1996 Summer Olympics.

• Georgia State University took over the dorms after the games, giving the Downtown school its first on-campus housing, according to the Atlanta History Center.
• GSU transferred the student housing complex to Tech in 2007.

The fine print: Guests need to book a three-night minimum stay.

What's next: Atlanta's first of eight matches, including one semifinal, takes place on June 15.
