Airbnb releases tool to estimate potential earnings as World Cup host

If you're weighing whether to list your property on Airbnb for World Cup visitors coming into town, a new tool released by the company could help you make that decision.
Why it matters: It pays (pun intended) to see how much you could earn from offering your space for rent.
Driving the news: Airbnb on Wednesday unveiled its Host Earnings Calculator for users in cities hosting FIFA World Cup games this summer.
- It comes after Airbnb announced it would provide a $750 incentive to new hosts who offer their entire home for rent on the platform.
How it works: The calculator factors in when, where and how long homeowners plan to host guests, and what kind of listing they will offer.
- As of Thursday, the calculator shows that a person offering a two-bedroom house for rent in metro Atlanta from June 14 to July 16 could earn from $135 to $556 per night.
Yes, but: The calculation takes into account the location of the home, with more pricey options available closer to the heart of the city.
The intrigue: Airbnb has identified Buckhead, the southern portion of the city and southwest Atlanta as "trending neighborhoods" since they've seen the largest year-over-year growth in bookings.
Zoom out: In December, the company said hosts in Atlanta could collectively earn about $3.7 million hosting guests for the games, according to a Deloitte study commissioned by the platform.
- The study projected that about 216,000 people who need places to stay will visit Atlanta and its surrounding cities.
- Deloitte said this includes about 6,000 Airbnb guests, who they expect will contribute 45,000 "guest nights" during the eight matches Atlanta will host.
State of play: FIFA last month returned some hotel rooms it booked in advance, and several hotel operators told the AJC that reservation rates have remained slow.
What we're watching: If property owners will look at Airbnb's estimator tool and determine if it's worth it.
