Project would build student center, housing near Morris Brown College

• The site will host a 100-room hotel and space for retail, which could include a small grocery store, nonprofits and "mission-driven businesses," according to a press release.
• The Resurgence team includes ImpactData, which aims to open data centers and "integrated flex programming space" on historically Black college and university campuses, along with The Miles Development Group and Gibraltar Capital Partners.

Zoom in: The team is partnering with Morris Brown College to construct a 30,000-square-foot student and conference center.

• Mercy Housing, Cityscape Housing and Prestwick Companies will build the residential component, which will include more than 200 rental units for mixed income levels and 15 homes that will go up for sale.

Catch up quick: Invest Atlanta, the city's economic development arm, acquired the site in 2014 and has since been working to secure a developer.

Context: The site is just north of the Atlanta University Center and is bounded by Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, Griffin Street and Sunset Avenue.

• The site is part of 35 acres in Vine City that was declared a historic district in 2011.
• The Sunset Avenue Historic District includes the homes of King, Maynard Jackson Sr. and Irene Dobbs Jackson, the parents of former Atlanta Mayor Maynard Jackson Jr.
• The Jackson home at 220 Sunset Ave. will be used to provide affordable housing options for Spelman College faculty members.
• The National Park Service acquired the King home at 234 Sunset Ave. in 2018 and is reviewing ways to restore the home that protect its historic nature.
