Former home of Maynard Jackson will become affordable housing

Driving the news: The Westside Future Fund and Spelman College will host a ribbon cutting at 1pm Monday for the newly restored home.

How it works: Westside Future Fund's partnership with Spelman will provide faculty members with affordable housing while potentially helping them become homeowners through Home on the Westside, a program that prioritizes people who already live in the community or have other ties to it.

Flashback: The home was built in 1949, and the Jackson family lived in one apartment on the second floor, according to Westside Future Fund.

• Jackson senior, a preacher at Friendship Baptist Church, used a third-floor apartment as his office and two first-floor units were rented out.

Catch up quick: The King Center acquired the property in the 1970s, and in 2018, the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historical Park expanded its boundaries to include the Sunset Avenue home.

• The King family initially sought a permit from the city of Atlanta to demolish the structure, but later opted to sell the building to Westside Future Fund after Vine City residents shared concerns about tearing down a historic part of the community.
