Publix to close Atlantic Station store in Atlanta

Florida-based grocery chain Publix announced it will close its store in Atlantic Station.
Why it matters: The closure leaves neighborhood residents without a nearby grocery store.
The latest: Publix spokesperson Nicole Krauss told Axios in a statement that the store, which has been operating for nearly two decades, will close on Dec. 27.
- Employees will be offered positions at nearby stores, Krauss said.
- "We've been privileged to serve the midtown community at the Publix at Atlantic Station for almost two decades," the statement said. "As one might imagine, there are a number of factors that go into determining whether we will continue to operate a store location."
- Publix will also close its grocery store at 2562 Shallowford Road in Chamblee on Dec. 27, Krauss said.
Catch up quick: According to a press release, the 30,312-square-foot store at Atlantic Station was smaller than Publix's typical size.
- Customers park in a parking deck below the store and use an elevator (or stairs) to access the main entrance.
Yes, but: Publix has five other locations within 2 miles of the Atlantic Station store: The Plaza Midtown, 950 W. Peachtree St. NW; Howell Mill Village, 2020 Howell Mill Road; Ansley Mall, 1544 Piedmont Ave.; Publix at Piedmont, 595 Piedmont Ave.; and Peachtree Battle Shopping Center, 2365 Peachtree Road.
The big picture: Publix's plan to shutter the Atlantic Station store follows a slew of grocery store openings and closures in recent years.
- Walmart in late 2022 closed Supercenter stores in Vine City and on Howell Mill near I-75 after fires were set inside both places.
- It later reopened the Vine City store as a neighborhood market concept (the Howell Mill store will be replaced by a Wayfair brick-and-mortar store).
- Kroger announced in June it would close four "underperforming" stores in metro Atlanta, the AJC reported.
- In October, Lidl opened a new location on Northside Drive near West Midtown.
What we're watching: If a smaller grocery store concept — or another type of business — will replace the Publix location.
