Outkast's Rock Hall induction honors Atlanta's legacy and hip-hop roots

Driving the news: Members André 3000 and Big Boi, who last took the stage together in 2014, attended the ceremony.

• Atlanta actor/musician Donald Glover inducted the duo, who were joined on stage by members of the legendary Dungeon Family crew.

What they said: "A lot of times it's a lot more than just the notes or the instruments that you're playing," said André 3000 during his emotional speech.

• "It's everybody that's around you. It's the family, and this is my family."

Zoom in: André and Big Boi gave several shoutouts to Atlanta institutions like Ben Hill Elementary School and Tri-Cities High School.

• They also paid homage to late Dungeon Family co-founder Rico Wade, with André choking up as he reminisced about the "little rooms" Outkast started in.

State of play: Andre, who has focused on other forms of music in recent years, did not perform.

• Big Boi led a free-for-all medley of Outkast hits featuring guests Tyler, the Creator, JID, Killer Mike and Sleepy Brown.

• The crowd's reaction reached its peak when Janelle Monáe, who got her career breakthrough on Outkast's 2006 album "Idlewild," gave a thrilling rendition of "Hey Ya!"

The big picture: Outkast is one of just 15 hip-hop artists inducted into the Rock Hall.

• "Outkast changed the entire game," John Sykes, chairman of the Rock Hall Foundation, told reporters backstage. "Other artists came before them, but they were just so much more."
