Uber opens early sign-up for robotaxi riders in Atlanta

Uber users who prefer quiet rides, take note.

Driving the news: Starting today, you can sign up to try Uber's autonomous service using Waymo vehicles — the one where no one is sitting behind the steering wheel — that's coming to Atlanta this summer.

Why it matters: People who sign up for the robotaxi "interest list" will increase their chances of being matched with the electric vehicle when it launches.

Select members of the list will receive early access to experience a self-driving vehicle before the service's roll-out, plus perks when they book their first robotaxi ride.

How to join: Update and open the Uber app. Tap Account>Settings>Ride preferences>Autonomous vehicles>Join interest list. Voila.

Zoom in: The service will cover a 65-square-mile territory "from Buckhead to Downtown to Capitol View" (so no airport rides yet) and the company could expand the footprint in the future, Uber says.

Rides will be priced on par with UberX, Uber Green, Uber Comfort, or Uber Comfort Electric. Read Waymo's FAQ on the Uber service
