Atlanta City Council race appears headed for runoff

The special election to fill the Post 3 at-large seat on the Atlanta City Council will likely be decided next month, as neither of the top candidates have gained enough votes to avoid a runoff.

Why it matters: The winner will fill the seat Keisha Sean Waites vacated earlier this year to run for clerk of Fulton County Superior Court.

The latest: Nicole Evans Jones received 40% while Eshé Collins came in second with 25% of the vote. A candidate would have needed more than 50% of the vote in order to avoid a runoff. See the results.

The three remaining candidates — Amber Higgins Connor, Devin Barrington Ward and Duvwon Robinson — will not make the runoff, which will be held Dec. 3.

State of play: Whoever wins the seat will serve only the remainder of Waites' term, which expires Dec. 31, 2025.

The next round of City Council elections will be held in November 2025.

What's next: Early voting dates and times will be announced for the Dec. 3 runoff.
