The NFL announced Tuesday that Super Bowl LXII will be held at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.
The big picture: It will be Atlanta's fourth time hosting the Super Bowl, and the second time at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
- Atlanta last hosted the Super Bowl in 2019.
- Before Mercedes-Benz opened in 2017, the Georgia Dome hosted the games in 1994 and 2000.
What they're saying: NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said in a statement that Atlanta is a "natural fit for Super Bowl 62," adding that Falcons owner Arthur Blank played a critical role in lobbying to bring the Super Bowl back to the city.
- Blank said in a statement that he hopes to see Atlanta "build off the success" of hosting the Super Bowl in 2019.
- "I look forward to working alongside our city and state officials as we continue to elevate Georgia as a premier, global sports destination."
Zoom in: Atlanta's bid to host Super Bowl LXII was submitted by the Atlanta Sports Council, which is made up of a team of volunteers who boost the city as a top choice to host national and international events.
- The NFL says Atlanta will also host other events across the metro area leading up to the game.
State of play: The latter half of the decade will be a busy one for Atlanta, as the city is preparing for several major sporting events.
- 🏈 The College Football National Championship will be played on Jan. 20, 2025 in Atlanta.
- ⚾️ Also next year, the Atlanta Braves will host the MLB All-Star Game at Truist Park.
- ⚽️ Atlanta will host eight matches of the 2026 World Cup, giving the city its most prominent spot on the world sports stage since the 1996 Olympics, Axios Atlanta previously reported.
- 🏀 The NCAA Division 1 Men's Basketball Committee also selected Atlanta to host the 2031 Men's Final Four.
What's next: The 2025 Super Bowl will be held at Caesars Superdome (New Orleans), Levi's Stadium (Santa Clara, Calif.) in 2026 and SoFi Stadium (Inglewood, Calif.) in 2027, Fox Sports reports.
What we're watching: Whether the Falcons will join the list of teams to play a Super Bowl game in their home stadium.
- So far, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2021 and the Los Angeles Rams in 2022 are the only teams to do so.
The bottom line: Mayor Andre Dickens said the city hosting previous Super Bowls helped propel the city to become "the sports capital of the country."
- "We have raised the bar with each subsequent game, and I look forward to outdoing ourselves in 2028."
