GOP-drawn congressional map faces final legislative hurdle

Details: The map once again shifts the 7th District, represented by U.S. Rep. Lucy McBath, further north, dramatically reducing her chances of getting re-elected next year.

• Lawmakers must get this done before a court-imposed deadline of Dec. 8.

State of play: The state Senate already approved the map on Tuesday. Now it goes to the House.

• The Georgia General Assembly also approved court-mandated redrawn maps of its state House and Senate district boundaries on Tuesday.
• Those are now headed to Gov. Brian Kemp's desk for his signature.

Of note: Both maps, which were drawn by the Republican majority, will allow the GOP to retain control of the legislature, according to the AJC.

Zoom in: The proposed 7th District moves from south Gwinnett and now includes parts of north Fulton, Hall and Cherokee and all of Forsyth, Dawson and Lumpkin counties.

• The AJC reports that the proposal maintains the existing makeup of 9 Republicans and 5 Democrats, and "doesn't include opportunities for more competition or changes."
• The newspaper also said the map could be tossed out because any remedies to meet the judge's order cannot disrupt existing districts that have sizable minority populations.

What they're saying: Republicans say the maps they drew comply with the judge's order.

• "There's too much at stake for us not to comply," state Sen. Bo Hatchett (R-Cornelia) said. "That's our goal. That's what we did."

The other side: State Sen. Donzella James (D-Atlanta) said Tuesday that the GOP-approved boundaries violate the judge's order because it dismantles Districts 7 and 13 — majority-minority districts — to create a new majority-Black district.

• "These voters will not have a new opportunity to select candidates of their choice," she said, referring to residents in Districts 7 and 13.
