The first updated coronavirus vaccines — and likely the last one purchased by Uncle Sam — are about to become available across the U.S. and will ideally provide more targeted protection against the dominant strain that's circulating.

Why it matters: Although COVID and its risks have become a routine part of life for most Americans, the virus is still killing around 400 Americans a day. Staying up to date on vaccines could minimize these deaths.

Time is running out to order free at-home COVID-19 tests after the government said on its coronavirus website that it will pause orders on Sept. 2, or “sooner if supplies run out.”

Why it matters: Consumers should prepare to soon pay for COVID-19 treatments and vaccines as the federal government prepares to shift costs back to health insurers, Axios’ Arielle Dreher reports.

While the U.S. has given "nearly all" of those most at-risk for monkeypox a dose of the vaccine, evidence of disparities are emerging.

The big picture: Black men account for about one-third of monkeypox cases in the U.S. while having received about 10% of vaccine doses, AP reports.
