Vaccines could have prevented nearly half of Pennsylvania's more than 28,000 COVID-19 deaths between January 2021 and last month, based on a new analysis of public health data from Brown University's School of Public Health. 

Driving the news: Researchers crafted a model illustrating what could have happened if 100% of American adults were fully vaccinated and boosted once the shots became available.

The study used real-world data from the CDC and the New York Times, while considering variables like supply and vaccine effectiveness over time. 

The big picture: Researchers estimate that vaccines could have prevented roughly 319,000 COVID deaths across the country, Axios' Tina Reed reports.

Meanwhile, the U.S. COVID death toll officially surpassed 1 million people this week, according to Johns Hopkins University data.

Zoom in: More than 28,207 Pennsylvania residents have died since vaccines were released, according to state data. 

An estimated 69% of Pennsylvania residents are fully vaccinated, according to the New York Times tracker.

Philly's vaccination rate for ages 12 and older is 76%, according to city data. For children ages 5-11, less than a third are fully vaccinated. 

What they're saying: "At a time when many in the U.S. have given up on vaccinations, these numbers are a stark reminder of the effectiveness of vaccines in fighting this pandemic," co-author Stefanie Friedhoff said in the analysis.

Former Penn Museum curator-in-charge Janet Monge is suing the University of Pennsylvania, various media outlets, the Association of Black Anthropologists and the Society of Black Archaeologists over "false" and "defamatory" reports of her alleged mishandling of a 1985 MOVE bombing victim's remains. 

Driving the news: Monge, an anthropologist, filed the lawsuit Friday against more than 30 defendants, including the Philadelphia Inquirer and Billy Penn.

Monge says she suffered harm to her reputation and was demoted from her position after Billy Penn and other outlets published articles last year claiming that she and her colleague Alan Mann had kept the remains of a MOVE bombing victim and that she used them in an online course.

Catch up fast: The city of Philadelphia dropped a bomb on a West Philadelphia home on Osage Avenue, where members of a Black liberation group known as MOVE lived, in 1985. Six adults and five children were killed.

The city medical examiner gave Mann children's bones after the bombing to identify them. He wasn't able to, but the remains weren't returned to the city. 

Last May, the city revealed its discovery that in 2017, former Philadelphia health commissioner Thomas Farley ordered a separate set of MOVE bombing victims' remains to be cremated without notifying family members. The order was never carried out. 

Between the lines: A Tucker Law group report examined how the remains from the 1985 bombing resulted in Penn's custody and were used in a 2019 online course. 

The group wrote that Monge and Mann did not "violate any professional, ethical or legal standards," but "demonstrated at a minimum, poor judgment and insensitivity."

What she's saying: In the complaint, Monge alleges she spent 36 years trying to identify the bone fragments of the remains.

She alleges that "defamatory" media reports were initiated by her former colleagues, University of Pennsylvania doctoral candidate Paul Mitchell and anthropology professor Deborah Thomas, in part in retaliation for Monge reporting Mitchell for "unprofessional conduct."

Monge also claims Mitchell falsified information to his "then-girlfriend" Maya Kassutto, who wrote one of the initial reports for Billy Penn before the story was picked up by multiple local and national outlets. 

Monge's lawyer, Alan Epstein, declined to comment further, saying "the complaint speaks for itself."

Context: Both Billy Penn and the Philadelphia Inquirer broke the story on the same day last spring. 

Kassutto previously worked at Penn Museum and was an intern in the physical anthropology section.

The response: Mitchell said in a statement to Axios, "claims, including those about me, which form the basis of Dr. Monge's complaint are substantially and demonstrably false."

Kassutto, the Philadelphia Inquirer, WHYY (the entity that owns Billy Penn) and Penn Museum declined to comment. Thomas didn't return Axios' request for comment.

Abdul-Aliy Muhammad, who wrote the Inquirer story, told Axios the media reports, including their own, were not mischaracterized and that their source was not Mitchell. 

"I think it's to intimidate and scare people who have been involved in the reporting, and I don't think it has merit," Muhammad told Axios of Monge's lawsuit.

By the numbers: PHL's 27-minute average wait is among some of the shortest TSA wait times, compared to the 39 U.S. international airports analyzed.

A new fantasy-themed bar is decked out and ready for its debut in Philadelphia next week. 

The Cauldron Magical Pub will soon bring your classic drinks of choice — but with a magic wand, fire and spells — to the Gayborhood.

What's happening: The new bar from South Jersey native Matthew Courtland and his co-founder David Duckworth will be the second to open in the U.S., after the New York City location.

There are four others in London and Edinburgh, Scotland.

How it works: The bar provides you with two options, a walk-in cocktail bar and the main event. 

Expect molecular mixology at the walk-in bar, plus fantasy-themed food.

The main event is a $39.99 ticketed adventure in which customers can make their own "magical potion" cocktails for an hour and 40 minutes. The pub provides you with a robe and a wand to assist in the process.

Details: Potion cocktails include the Transfiguration Toniq, a spin on a lavender martini, and the Lost Thyme, a rum, thyme and lemon juice-based cocktail made in a cauldron.

The big picture: The queer-founded company behind the bar is also planning to host more events for the LGBTQ+ community at the new spot.

"Queer people connect with fantasy because there's themes of not being understood by mainstream society but then finding acceptance in another place where you belong," Duckworth told Axios.

The bar only sells tickets in three-month intervals and has already sold 2,000 pre-sale tickets. 

What they're saying: "We want to bring magic across the world and make dreams come true," Duckworth said.

1 cool thing: All of the locations encourage patrons to bring in their favorite fantasy books so they can be donated to underserved schools. 

The owners are working on finding a partnership to do the same in Philly.

A number of Philadelphia's community gardens are at risk of going away. 

Why it matters: These lots are primarily located in low-income, Black and Latino neighborhoods in North and West Philadelphia. 

Community gardens can improve food access, beautify and revitalize public spaces and even decrease violence, per the CDC.

Catch up fast: In 1997, the city bundled together roughly 30,000 tax liens and sold them to U.S. Bank to raise money for school funding. But investors weren't able to collect on many of the liens, eventually leading to thousands of vacant and abandoned properties scattered across Philly. 

In the years since, residents have maintained several properties and turned hundreds of areas into community gardens and green spaces. 

U.S. Bank, meanwhile, has been sending the abandoned properties to sheriff's sales in an attempt to sell them all by October 2023. 

The latest: City Councilmember Kendra Brooks is spearheading a campaign to keep roughly 500 sites her office identified as gardens, side yards or potential affordable housing locations that haven't been sold yet.

Brooks wants Philly to buy back the liens through a $10 million budget line item. The city can acquire the land and then prioritize selling to community groups. 

Yes, but: There's not a clear path to make that a reality yet. 

Options include tapping the city's unused American Rescue Plan money or  revenue from the new property tax assessments in neighborhoods that have seen rapid development. 

Of note: Councilmembers Jamie Gauthier, Helen Gym, Mark Squilla, Curtis Jones, and Katherine Gilmore Richardson support the proposal. 

What they're saying: "We're talking about communities that have been intentionally disinvested in. So when a community takes a hold and decides to do something to empower itself, the government should make sure it honors that," Brooks told Axios.

Council President Darrell Clarke said the proposal would be considered during the city's upcoming budget process. 

Linebarger Goggan Blair & Sampson, a law firm representing U.S. Bank, didn't return to Axios' request for comment.
