Sunday was the busiest day in history for U.S. airports.

The big picture: The Transportation Security Administration screened just over 2.9 million passengers at the end of the holiday weekend, marking an agency record.

  • The busy travel day was despite weather threats as a storm system moved across the country. Nearly 14 million people were under various weather alerts on Sunday.

Zoom out: The TSA predicted "busier than ever" travel this holiday season, already having screened a record number of passengers in 2023.

  • The last daily high, under 2.9 million passengers, was in June. The previous record was set in 2019.

Details: In a year plagued with flight delays and cancellations, airlines braced for an increase in customers over Thanksgiving weekend.

  • American Airlines canceled fewer flights this Thanksgiving period than ever before, as the company flew a record number of passengers throughout the week.
