1 big thing: 20 missing Americans

There are still "20 or more" missing Americans after the surprise Hamas attack on Israel, the White House said today.
- "I have no higher priority than the safety of Americans being held hostage around the world," President Biden said in a forceful speech this afternoon.
Zoom in: Biden confirmed at least 14 Americans were killed and U.S. citizens are among the hostages being held by the militant group, Axios' Barak Ravid and Erin Doherty write.
- Biden spoke from the White House's State Dining Room after a call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
The big picture: The confirmation that Americans have been killed and are being held hostage will likely draw the U.S. deeper into the crisis.
- "The brutality of Hamas' blood thirstiness brings to mind the worst rampages of ISIS. This is terrorism," Biden said, standing alongside Vice President Harris and Secretary of State Tony Blinken.
2. 🤖 AI translates video

A new free app allows people to get their videos dubbed into 28 languages — in their own voice and with their lips synchronized to the translated audio, Axios AI+ co-author Ina Fried writes.
- Lipdub, a free iOS app available for pre-order from AI startup Captions, demonstrates just how useful generative AI can be.
🔎 Zoom in: The app requires people to record a video on their phone with only their face in view.
- It uploads the video and returns it to the user in a few minutes with the new language overdub applied.
In addition to foreign languages, Lipdub has added options like Texas slang, Gen Z, pirate and baby talk.

4. 📚 Book preview: Inside the Situation Room
Cover: Grand Central Publishing
ABC's George Stephanopoulos will be out in May with "The Situation Room" — a new book on "the decisions made in that windowless warren in the basement of the West Wing."
- "Along with the Oval Office, no place better exemplifies the power and mystery of the Presidency than the White House Situation Room," Stephanopoulos said in a release.
There's been no comprehensive history of the room in nearly two decades, according to the Clinton White House aide.
- "When I discovered that fact, I knew I had to write this book," Stephanopoulos said.
He's represented by Matt Latimer and Keith Urbahn, founders of the Javelin agency.
