1 big thing: Trump's lawyer trap

Three Trump-aligned lawyers have flipped in less than a week and agreed to cooperate with prosecutors in the Georgia election interference case.
- Why it matters: The plea deals could help Fulton County (Ga.) District Attorney Fani Willis with her case against former President Trump.
What's happening: Jenna Ellis — who had been a member of Trump's legal team after the 2020 election — pleaded guilty this morning to a single felony charge, Axios' Erin Doherty writes.
- Prosecutors have also struck deals with Sidney Powell and Kenneth Chesebro.

Zoom in: The lawyers were all part of Trump's efforts to overturn his 2020 election loss.
- "If I knew then what I know now, I would have declined to represent Donald Trump in these post-election challenges," Ellis said.
Trump also squared off with Michael Cohen, another former lawyer, in a New York courtroom today.
- Cohen, with Trump in attendance, testified that the former president would arbitrarily come up with net worth estimations, according to NBC News.
2. 🚨 Breaking: Emmer drops out

House Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-Minn.) abruptly dropped out of the speaker race four hours after he became the GOP nominee, Axios' Andrew Solender writes.
- Why it matters: He's the third GOP nominee to fall short during the House's three-week speaker vacancy.
Rep. Mike Johnson (R-La.), who narrowly lost to Emmer earlier this afternoon, is now a likely front-runner in the next round.
- Emmer — a relative moderate — faced animosity from former President Trump, who said that voting for him "would be a tragic mistake."
3. Catch me up

- 🧮 The total number of legal abortions in the U.S. increased slightly in the year after the Supreme Court overturned Roe, Axios' Jason Millman writes.
- ✈️ An off-duty pilot who police say tried to cut the engines on a jet was experimenting with psychedelic mushrooms, according to a federal complaint. Go deeper ... Read the complaint.
- 📱 Dozens of state attorneys general sued Facebook and Instagram parent Meta for allegedly lying about risks to children and teens, Axios' Sara Fischer writes.
- 🚘 The California DMV suspended Cruise's driverless car permit, citing safety concerns. The autonomous vehicle company is majority-owned by GM. Go deeper.
4. 🌮 1 fun thing: Freeing "Taco Tuesday"

A drawn-out saga over the "Taco Tuesday" trademark is over: The popular phrase is now free to use in all 50 states, Axios' Kelly Tyko writes.
- Taco Bell announced today — a Tuesday, of course — that a local restaurant has relinquished its registration of the trademark in New Jersey.
A Wyoming-based chain gave up the rights to the phrase in 49 other states this summer.
- Taco Bell filed legal petitions in May aiming to cancel the trademark registrations.
