Former President Trump speaks at a rally at the Sarasota Fairgrounds on Saturday. Photo: Paul Hennessy/Anadolu Agency via Getty Images

Among the slew of signs seen at the Sarasota rally on Saturday headlined by former President Trump was the following, which caught our eye: "Make America Florida."

State of play: Turns out, that's the name of a new political action committee, per Florida Politics. The PAC was registered with the Federal Elections Commission on April 2.

  • We couldn't find much about Melissa Peters, the woman listed in FEC documents as the PAC's treasurer, but the P.O. Box she used to register the committee is the same one used in the past by Evan Power, an FSU alum and chairman of the Republican Party of Florida.

"Florida has become a model for the nation for conservative politics," Power told Axios.

  • He told us he noticed the momentum behind the slogan online and wanted to capitalize on the Sunshine State's popularity in conservative circles to raise money for national Republican candidates.

Heavy rains and gusty winds were spreading inland across southwest and west-central Florida as Elsa weakened to a still-dangerous tropical storm early Wenesday, per the National Hurricane Center.

State of play: Elsa was 60 miles west of Tampa, Florida, packing maximum sustained winds of 70 mph, the National Hurricane Center said in its 2a.m. ET advisory. A tornado watch was issued for several areas of the state.

Bezos beats Branson in space billionaires' battle for attention

Jeff Bezos' flight into space generated more interest from the public than Richard Branson's, and both billionaires overshadowed their respective space companies.

Why it matters: Data shows an outsized public interest in the personalities at the center of the space trips, compared to the companies behind them — which could reinforce public suspicion that the ventures were partly vanity plays.
