No power outages expected in Tampa Bay after Duke Energy alert

State of play: "Several days of sustained low temperatures are driving unusually high energy demand in our area," the text message read, before asking customers to cut back Monday morning on "nonessential energy use."

• By Monday afternoon, the utility company said it was "in a strong position to reliably meet customer demand for the rest of the week" and thanked customers for limiting their use.
• That means no rolling blackouts (planned service disruptions to avoid a power grid collapse), Duke spokesperson Ana Gibbs told Axios. The power company also won't ask customers to limit usage again, Gibbs said.

The big picture: Floridians are used to outages from hurricanes, but stretches of extreme cold weather can also stress the power grid.

• Duke sent a similar text message to customers in North Carolina.

What they're saying: "Florida's grid is interconnected among all the utilities across the state and southeast United States," Gibbs said.

• "By maximizing the amount of electricity available on the grid we can not only serve our Duke Energy Florida customers, but also share with neighboring utilities who may need additional power."
