Hurricane Ian documentary brings lessons learned to Tampa Bay

Driving the news: "Rising: Surviving the Surge," a new documentary by WGCU Public Media, features reflections from residents, first responders and experts on how the storm reshaped the region.

Here's how to catch the screenings and panel discussions, hosted by Florida Humanities:

• Thursday, Tampa Theatre
• Aug. 14, University of South Florida St. Petersburg
• Sept. 24, The Portico Cafe
• Oct. 22, Eckerd College

Flashback: Ian brought up to 15 feet of storm surge and winds up to 150 mph to Fort Myers, Punta Gorda and surrounding areas, according to the National Hurricane Center.

• The storm's impacts killed 66 people in Florida, the majority of whom drowned in the surge, while another 90 died from indirect causes, such as lack of access to timely medical care, car accidents and suicide.

The bottom line: With Hurricane Helene last year bringing just a fraction of those impacts, it's important to understand and prepare for how much worse it can get.
