Report explores what happens to debris after a storm

• An office chair sat outside for over a month before it showed up at the Pinellas County Solid Waste Disposal Complex, which doesn't accept storm debris; "a curious mishap," one official said.
• A waterlogged, motorized scooter was towed to an auto auction, sold to a scrap recycler, shredded and melted into rebar later sent to construction sites across Florida.
• A DirecTV receiver sat curbside for weeks before being hauled to a community park-turned-dump, then to a recycling facility, where the AirTag's movement stopped, likely after being crushed in the sorting process.

The big picture: Cleanup on Treasure Island, one of Florida's smaller communities, involved 7,000 truckloads of trash and required two companies to work for 50 days straight.

• And while the bulk of debris is gone, there's still work to be done.
• "As more and more people move to parts of the country increasingly vulnerable to hurricane disasters, complicated efforts to deal with the debris left behind are expected to only grow," the Post wrote.
