I may have a regular Wawa five minutes from my house, but I simply had to drive the half hour to Largo to give the new Wawa drive-thru a try.
Why it matters: The twist on the convenience store and gas station* chain with a cult following opened this month at 2530 East Bay Dr., and it's the first one in Florida.
- *There's no gas at this location.
Fun fact: Some fanatics arrived at the June 13 grand opening at 4:30am, per Tampa Bay Newspapers.
State of play: The … restaurant? — sure, we'll call it that — offers its fan-favorite hoagies along with burgers, breakfast sandwiches, chicken sandwiches, quesadillas and more.
- Convenience store staples like chips and candy were also on the menu along with a long list of hot, iced and frozen beverages.
The vibe: I wish I had more to add to the Wawa lore, but y'all, it was just a regular drive-thru.
- It had two lanes, Chick-fil-A style, which wasn't necessary for my 3pm visit but must come in clutch during the breakfast and lunch rushes.
- The menu was clear and easy to read, the employees were kind, and I got my turkey hoagie and fudge brownie milkshake ($9.73 total) within 5 minutes of ordering.
The verdict: The milkshake was so good I'm still thinking about it. For all you Starbucks heads, it tastes like a cheaper version of the Chocolate Cookie Crumble Crème Frappuccino.
- The hoagie was, as always with Wawa hoagies, perfectly adequate and felt less harsh on my body than typical fast food.
- I'd love some of these to pop up along highways for road-trip food. Otherwise, I'll definitely make another stop next time I'm in Largo.
