Here comes more construction as Tampa's Malfunction Junction gets an upgrade.
FDOT has started an $85 million project to add one lane in each direction on Interstate 275 from the I-4 interchange to West Hannah Avenue, half a mile north of Hillsborough Avenue
What's new: Noise-barrier walls will be built along most of the corridor β through Tampa Heights, V.M. Ybor, Ybor Heights and Seminole Heights.
- Underpasses will be improved with wider sidewalks and bright underdeck lighting at Floribraska, Lake, MLK, Chelsea, Osborne and Hillsborough.
- Perhaps the most important traffic flow upgrade will be the removal of the hump on the 1-4 ramp off I-275 southbound, which causes daily backups.
What to expect: Some lanes will close between 9 p.m. and 6:30 a.m., and an occasional off-ramp will close at night. Check here for closures. Construction is expected to finish in early 2026.
