BART policing the focus of new racial equity study

BART will be subject to a new fare evasion enforcement study with racial equity as a focus.

Why it matters: Previous research found that Black riders were stopped by BART Police Department (BPD) officials eight times as often as white riders. They were also 15 times more likely to experience BPD use of force compared to white riders.

BART rolls out anime mascots to attract younger riders

BART is debuting five new anime mascots in a bid to reach younger riders and bolster community engagement amid sustained financial struggles.

Driving the news: The mascots are inspired by BART frontline employees and BART-contracted animals — like the goats that graze BART property, according to a press release from the transit agency.

San Francisco Bay Area drivers are paying less for gas than last year, but they're still paying some of the highest gas prices throughout the country.

The big picture: Gas prices set record all-time highs last year amid a broader inflation crisis, and driven in part by Russia's invasion of Ukraine, which destabilized global energy markets.
