The stretch of the PanAm Expressway, which traverses the west side of downtown between U.S. 281 and U.S. 90, ranks among the most congested roadways in Texas.

Why it matters: The San Antonio-New Braunfels area had 10 of the state's 100 most congested road segments in 2024, according to a recent Texas A&M mobility report — including the maddening stretch that cuts through the west side of the city center.

Zoom in: San Antonians lost more than 39 million hours to traffic delays in 2024, down 2.3% from 2023.

The PanAm Expressway section ranks 43rd statewide. The roughly 4-mile stretch can add about 13 minutes to a commute.

Yes, but: None of San Antonio's roadways cracked the state's top 10 most congested list.

By the numbers: Traffic congestion in the area wasted more than 13 million gallons of fuel in 2024 — up more than 31% from 2023.

San Antonio could potentially host a training site for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Why it matters: That gives us the opportunity to play a role in what's known as the world's most-watched sporting event. Each World Cup match has been compared to the spectacle of a Super Bowl.

How it works: The tournament's 48 teams will be able to establish their own homes away from home. The base camps will be where players and staff will spend most of their time during the group stage.

Each training site will be paired with a hotel.

Zoom in: San Antonio, Salt Lake City and St. Louis are among cities that aren't hosting a match but are in the running for a base camp site.

Texas saw the country's second lowest turnout in the 2024 presidential election, per new Census Bureau estimates.

Why it matters: Texas' consistently low turnout could mean voters don't think it's competitive to cast a ballot in the state, University of Houston political science professor Brandon Rottinghaus tells Axios.

What they're saying: "We wanna think that Texas is the best at everything — in barbecue, in football — but the reality is that we fall significantly behind when it comes to voter turnout," Rottinghaus says.

Flashback: GOP turnout last year far outstripped Democratic turnout in Texas.

The big picture: About 65% of voting-age Americans cast a ballot in last November's elections, down from nearly 67% in 2020, per the Census Bureau.

Arkansas (52.8%), Texas (57.9%) and Louisiana (58%) had the lowest shares of voting-age citizens participating.

By the numbers: A higher percentage of Texas women (59.9%) voted than men (55.9%), mirroring national trends.

Turnout was highest among white non-Hispanic voters (66.6%) in Texas and lower among Black (57.7%), Asian (52.3%) and Hispanic (44.5%) voters.

Reality check: Texas is one of the youngest states in the U.S. by median age, and data shows that older people are often more likely to vote than younger people.

Plus, Hispanic Texans make up the highest share of the state's population. They are historically less likely to vote than other groups, per Rottinghaus.

Between the lines: Lack of participation doesn't necessarily imply voter apathy. Some want to vote but are unable to.

Several states allow same-day registration to vote. Texas does not.

Only those who are over 65, sick or disabled, close to giving birth, in jail or out of the county on Election Day are allowed to vote by mail in Texas.

What's next: "The upside to this is there are a lot of ways to encourage people to vote that we know can potentially improve our bottom line," Rottinghaus says.

Texas had second lowest 2024 voter turnout in nation

Texas voters might not think it is a competitive state.

Restaurants and grocery stores are starting to crack under the weight of the nation's egg crisis.

Why it matters: The bird flu outbreak has ravaged the nation's supply of eggs, leading to egg shortages and increased grocery prices.

By the numbers: A dozen large eggs in the South Central region, which includes Texas, hit $8.20 per dozen this week, according to price-reporting service Expana.

The region's figure was $2.33 in October, before the current wave of bird flu began to spread, per Expana.

Some local H-E-Bs are selling a dozen organic eggs for over $10, while the cheapest dozen we found, a Hill Country Fare option, costs about $5.60.

Flashback: The South Central region's previous record was $5.61, set in December 2022.

Threat level: The bird flu has affected over 24 million birds in the last 30 days, according to USDA data. The nation's flock is estimated at about 305 million.

"A good rule of thumb is you need a hen per U.S. citizen," says Matt Sutton-Vermeulen, a supply chain expert for management consultancy Kearney. The U.S. population is about 340 million.

State of play: Trader Joe's is limiting purchases to one carton per customer per day.

An Axios attempt to place an online order with H-E-B showed a limit of five cartons of eggs, though an H-E-B spokesperson told Axios there are no limits on eggs. 

It's unclear if the limit — though more generous than that of Trader Joe's — is tied to the ongoing egg shortage. 

H-E-B said it remains in good supply of eggs and that it is closely monitoring the situation.

Between the lines: For the first time in at least 40 years, eggs are now more expensive per gram of protein than ground beef, according to January Consumer Price Index data.

What they're doing: Texas chain Taco Palenque is temporarily adding a 50-cent surcharge on tacos and a 75-cent surcharge on burritos with eggs, according to social media posts.

Bobbie's Cafe adjusted menu prices to offset the costs of eggs, per MySA.

A Texas-based technology firm has built a multibillion-dollar business out of helping local governments break up with their archaic systems, but it's caused issues in San Antonio and elsewhere.

Why it matters: Tyler Technologies doesn't have major competitors, giving it a near-monopoly on the public sector nationwide, per Bloomberg.

Zoom in: Bexar County rolled out a new Odyssey system from Tyler in early June to manage its criminal case system. Problems arose immediately, multiple local news outlets reported.

Some people couldn't get out of Bexar County Jail for days, despite paying bond, per KENS.

The system incorrectly listed innocent people as guilty, NEWS 4 reported.

Nearly two months after its rollout, in July, issues remained, per KSAT.

What they're saying: State District Court Judge Velia Meza told KSAT that victims and defendants weren't seeing their cases resolved.

"Before I could hear 60 to 70 cases on a Monday, and now we're doing about half of that," Meza said in July.

The latest: Bexar County spokesperson Isaac Neri tells Axios the county has not received reports of more glitches.

The big picture: Tyler's products span construction permitting, police dispatching, jail booking, property appraising, campground reservations, restaurant inspecting, cannabis licensing and school bus tracking, per Bloomberg.

Between the lines: Governments are notorious for moving slowly. Municipalities might not be prepared for challenges that could arise.

Zoom out: North Carolina used Tyler software to manage its court system, and counties also encountered glitches that led to problems — including inaccurate speeding tickets and wrongful arrests, per Bloomberg.

The other side: Tyler tells Bloomberg that it has a 98% client retention rate and the vast majority of its implementations are fine.

"When you start changing processes, all it takes is one or two users to not get it or to not want to do it differently," chief operating officer Jeff Puckett told Bloomberg.

What's next: Tyler will host its Tyler Connect conference for product training in San Antonio in May 2025.
