Early voting begins Monday for the Nov. 3 midterm election, giving Bexar County voters a chance to weigh in on everything from state leadership to local school boards.
Why it matters: Beyond choosing who represents them in government, San Antonio voters will make decisions that could shape schools, public services and the criminal justice system for years to come.
The big picture: While the races for governor and U.S. Senate have dominated headlines, several down-ballot contests and propositions will have a more direct impact on San Antonio.
- Voters will also elect members of Congress and weigh in on a slew of statewide and judicial races.

Here's a look at some of the local races and ballot measures.
Bexar County judge
Former San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg, a Democrat, faces Republican Patrick Von Dohlen.
- The winner will lead Commissioners Court, which oversees the county's budget, infrastructure and public services.
District attorney
Democrat Luz Elena Chapa, Republican Ashley Foster and independent Jason Wolff are competing to succeed retiring District Attorney Joe Gonzales.
- The winner will oversee felony prosecutions and shape how the county handles criminal cases as the county's top prosecutor.
School funding
Five San Antonio-area school districts are asking voters to approve tax increases to support staffing, programs and facility improvements. Northside and San Antonio ISDs are also seeking approval for bond packages.
Pre-K 4 SA
San Antonio voters will decide whether to reauthorize the sales tax supporting the city's early childhood education program. The proposal would also allow the program to expand to include infants and toddlers.
